How to Deal with Your Mind Focusing on Problems

This was my mind for decades… finding problems, worrying, stressing, rehashing, replaying, revisiting.

Life has challenges. Some are very painful. And we are allowed all our big feelings, and to process it all out – psychologically emotionally and energetically.

However… after a long time of first hand experience and coaching thousands of people to recover themselves (as I did) from being owned by and run by their mind, what I know is this…

We can make things way more painful for ourselves by OVER focusing on problems and unnecessarily rehashing issues.

It is healthy and good to revisit problems to learn from them, to resolve them, to plan for how to move forward. But then there comes a point when our minds are no longer doing good and instead have turned in on ourselves and now the pain is coming from our own mind… not just the original problem.

I love how Sadhguru said that our intelligence has turned against us. The first time I heard that my entire being agreed with full body resonance. Yes! It’s like our minds start eating us alive from the inside, tormenting and if we don’t recognize that we can adjust our focus and take ownership of our inner state of being, then the mind completely takes over.

People say to me… “Yes B, but it’s not that easy, because my mind just does it without me having any control. And my problem is very real (illness, finances, toxic relationship etc)” and I reply…

“Yes beautiful soul, it’s not that easy or everyone would be peaceful and free 24×7 but… it is most definitely possible and not complicated to bring presence, focus and calm into your inner being and life, and it’s way easier and less painful than letting the mind continue to run away into fear, stress, strain, and scenario mapping of negative what ifs”.

We do have “control”, though not the type people assume. Control is not stopping something happening or making something happen. You can’t stop yourself having thoughts. The control is how you CHOOSE to respond to what arises in the inner processing & chosen perspective, and how you process arising emotions.

And yes life problems are real and we can still find acceptance, calm and grace in any situation.

Like taking a shower each day to clean the body, or brushing your teeth each day, when we take on simple daily routine for mental and emotional “hygiene” it changes the way we experience life.

Learning how to attend to my mind, to calm it, to train it, to provide it with loving leadership of what to focus on, filling it with a new paradigm, has been game changing. Some people say to me… oh that sounds like hard work. Consider… it’s a lot less work than the hard work of living 24×7 inside a mind that is driving you bonkers! I know! Been there, done that. And I’ve seen clients pivot on the spot OUT of old patterns once they see things clearly in new light, and within weeks having a whole new mindset to live from that entirely supports who they want to be and how they want to live.

Here are starting steps for how to deal with your mind if it tends to always focus on problems and the negative:

  1. Practice presence and self awareness to catch when your mind is doing this.
  2. Notice that you are NOT your thoughts. You are the observer of your thoughts and you can CHOOSE how to respond to those thoughts and where to direct your mind to focus instead.
  3. Be practical and attend to the “problem” or “negative” situation that your mind is stressed, worried, fearful or negative about – is there something that you need to change, do, or resolve? If so, take that action.
  4. Then start training your mind to a paradigm that will work for you (not against you) – ingraining perspectives that make peace with what has been (past), being solutions-oriented with what is (present), and training in empowered new beliefs and a vision that will support you to create what you want (future).
